Meet the Students
Melissa 2010
Winchester, VA
“Art students are never restricted here. We’re given the means to do whatever we want creatively,” says Melissa who has come into her own as an artist in her upper year.
But even though she’s now the cartoon editor for the school’s newspaper and helps design posters and set construction for theatre productions, Melissa was hesitant to get involved in the art scene beyond her basic classes when she first arrived at Andover.
“The teachers here really want you to get involved. In the beginning I told one of my teachers I wanted to do more with art and the next thing you know she’s emailing everyone in the art department with my name letting them know I wanted to be more active,” says Melissa.
Citing the accessible facilities and inspiring faculty, Melissa says the relaxed atmosphere helps with creativity. “All the art kids hang out at Elson and it’s cool just going there, hanging out and seeing what everyone’s working on,” Melissa says.
“I’ve found my style and continue to foster my skills.”
