Meet the Students

David 2010

Seoul, Korea

After returning from a spring break trip with the Academy Orchestra, which performed in several venues across Eastern Europe, and his perspective on classical music changed. “It’s amazing how much more classical music is appreciated overseas. It was cool to have the opportunity to play at the Cathedral in Budapest,” David says.

David has played the cello since age five, but now takes lessons on campus and performs with both the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. He says, “My instructor is different than any other I’ve ever had. He really focuses on posture and body positioning to achieve a better tone.” David also attributes his growth as a musician to his AP Music Theory class, which gave him a better understanding of different instruments and styles.

While David doesn’t see himself becoming a professional cellist, he may find his calling in another art form. “I wish I had more time to take all of the electives—art, art history, even architecture. That’s something I never thought I’d have the chance to study.”
