Summer Opportunities Fair

27th Annual Summer Opportunities Fair

Sunday, January 22, 2017

Although it will be a few months yet before winter gives way to spring, middle school and high school students can get a jump on their summer plans by attending Phillips Academy’s 27th annual Summer Opportunities Fair on Sunday, January 22, from Noon to 3 p.m. The Gap Year Fair, held concurrently from Noon to 3 p.m., will give older students and their parents a chance to explore programs designed for students interested in taking a year off between high school and college. Both fairs are free and open to the public. The Summer Opportunities Fair will be held from Noon to 3 p.m. in the Smith Center, located off Route 28 near Salem Street on the Phillips Academy campus. The event is sponsored by the Parents of Students of Phillips Academy (PSPA).

This fair gives middle school and high school students and their families the chance to meet with representatives from more than 100 local, national and international summer programs. A wide range of programs will be represented at the fair, including those that focus on academics, language study, community service, camps, sports, arts, research, internships, outdoor adventure, international travel and employment opportunity and scholarships. Additional information can be found on the Summer Opportunities website.

The Gap Year Fair will be held from Noon to 3:00 p.m. in Case Memorial Cage (adjacent to the Smith Center). This event is sponsored by USA Gap Year Programs, which holds 30 such fairs across the country each year. There will be a featured speaker from 12:00 to 12:30 pm. A gap year is a year that high school graduates use to pursue other experiences before going off to college. The popularity of gap years is growing at an exponential rate in the United States and the demand for these events has increased dramatically. Each year approximately 10 to 15 Phillips Academy graduates take advantage of a gap year experience and then attend their deferred college choices. Additional information about the fair can be found on the USA Gap Year Fairs website at http://usagapyearfairs.org/fairs.
