Oxfam

How To Join

You can join Oxfam by signing up at the Club Rallies held in the fall and winter or during Community Service Sign ups held at the beginning of each term. You can also just drop by any meeting and express interest to the student coordinator.

Club Description

Oxfam, as an international foundation, works with local partners, delivers development programs and emergency relief services, and campaigns for change in global practices and policies that keep people in poverty. Visit their website at http://www.oxfam.org. On campus, we talk about the various global justice initiatives that Oxfam is campaigning for each week. We have fun ways to learn about these topics through skits, games and events. Some meetings also consist of preparing for upcoming awareness events, by making posters, hosting sign ups and planning event agendas. Topics discussed include issues such as world hunger, poverty, workers rights, natural disaster relief, fair trade, and other world justice issues.

Oxfam Events

Each year, Oxfam holds a number of different fundraisers and awarness events on campus.

Fall: In the fall, Oxfam hosts the Oxfam Benefit Auction where students and faculty donate items and they are auctioned off to the school. The event includes MC’s and student performances. This past year we helped raise about $5,000. Also in the fall, Oxfam hosts the Sadie Hawkins Dance. All the proceeds from the tickets go towards Oxfam International.

Winter: Oxfam holds a fast on one night in the winter term where students are asked to abstain from eating dinner in Uncommons. For each student that signs up to fast that night, $1.50 is donated to Oxfam’s Initiatives. We hope that through this activity student can begin to imagine on a tiny scale what it feels like to be hungry. In addition to the fast, Oxfam sells hand-made, personalized valentines as a fundraiser.

Spring: Each spring Oxfam hosts a Hunger banquet in which students partake in an experiential activity that demonstrates the inequality of access to food around the world.
