Club Description
The Center for Global Justice endeavors to support the community service program by striving to “motivate students to consider and act upon issues of social justice and civic responsibility and thus foster a commitment to the lifetime of effective participation in public life.” The Center for Global Justice aims to: 1) promote and encourage an understanding of the complexities of injustices in the world; 2) inspire an informed citizenry of students, faculty and staff to confront injustice and enact positive social change; and 3) create opportunities for dialogue and the open exchange of ideas.
Each term the Center for Global Justice picks a social justice issue or particular region of the world to focus on. The topic is explored through discussions, presentations, photos, videos, and role-play activities. After club members have learned about the particular issue, Center for Global Justice organizes events to inform and involve the community. Each year the club hosts a Fair Trade Coffee House. Other events the club has run include: a sweatshop awareness event, a trip to an organization called Lawrence Community Works to learn about community building, and a trip to the Cor Unum Soup Kitchen in Lawrence.
The Center for Global Justice looks at a wide variety of social justice issues, trying to choose issues that are connected to current events as much as possible. Recent topics covered include: immigration in the United States, the conflict between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, sweatshops, and Fair Trade.
All are welcome to join.
