Club Description
Af-Lat-Am (African Latino American Society) was created in 1968 to provide support and mentorship for students of African and Latino decent, and to raise awareness and promote understanding about black and Latino culture on campus. Af-Lat-Am hosts club meetings to discuss important issues, and to just have FUN! The club is open to any and everyone! Af-Lat-Am also hosts two cultural weekend events a year—Latin Arts Weekend in the fall and Black Arts Weekend in the winter—which include invited entertainment and speakers, dances, and special food choices in Commons to commemorate the weekends. Additionally, the club sponsors a Food Bazaar annually in which students and faculty cook an ethnic dish of their choice to share with the school community. In the spring, Af-Lat-Am hosts a talent show called Coffeehouse to showcase student talent. The club also runs a year-long mentor program called “Big Brothers Big Sisters” which pairs incoming students at all grade levels who are seeking mentorship with an experienced student who signed up to be a “big brother” or “big sister.”
