Max C. Alovisetti
Director of Counseling

Max Alovisetti is a Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Prior to coming to Phillips Academy in 1986, Max served as a special education and elementary school teacher, a director of a school psychology training program, and a child and adolescent psychologist for U.S. Army in Germany. His training included a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical child psychology at the University of Maryland Medical School. Max’s current major areas of interest include integrating Buddhist psychological perspectives and meditation with western models of mental health and counseling and using facilitative mediation for conflict resolution. He has attended numerous insight mediation retreats and while on sabbatical in Nepal, studied at a Tibetan monastery and trekked in the Himalayas. Max is also an Ombudsman at Phillips Academy and a volunteer mediator with the Boston District Courts..

Carlos Hoyt
Associate Dean of Students
Psychological Counselor
Carlos Hoyt is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a MSW from Boston University. Carlos joined the Andover community in 2006 after having worked in a variety of clinical, educational, and social service settings involving direct and administrative roles. These have included working with children and families challenged by severe psychological and social issues, teaching clinical skills and practice at the graduate and undergraduate level, and providing training and consultation in crisis and behavior management and cultural competence.
Carlos coordinates the provision of adolescent health and development programs to students at Andover including drug and alcohol awareness, a cultural competence seminar, and AIDS/HIV Awareness workshops. Carlos specializes in racial identity development practice and theory and he is currently developing research in this area as a member of the doctoral program in social work at Simmons

Carol L. Israel
Instructor in Psychology
Associate Director of Counseling Center
Carol Israel is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been at Phillips Academy since 1985 and has served as director of psychological services and chair of the psychology department since 1995. She teaches Introductory Psychology, as well as Life Issues, a course that deals with living and learning in a diverse community. She did her academic work at the University of Chicago and received her clinical training at the University of Chicago's Orthogenic School and at Harvard University's McLean Hospital. Israel is currently chair of the Community Health Team and a member of the Student Disability Support Committee. Her clinical specialty is eating disorders, and as part of her work in that area, she is adviser to the student group PHIT (Physical Health and Information Team).

Margaret N. Jackson
Instructor in Psychology

Maggie Jackson is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. After completing her internship at McLean Hospital in 1981, she became a staff psychologist in the McLean/ Metropolitan State Hospital program. Joining the Phillips Academy faculty in 1983, she has served as director of psychological services, psychology department chair, founding member and executive committee member of the Brace Center for Gender Studies and instructor in psychology. She has particular interests in women's issues and the impact of alcoholism on families, and she runs the school's date rape prevention program. Jackson holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from Long Island University. Prior to her career in psychology, she was a professional flutist for 10 years in New York City. She currently singis in local choral groups and plays the flute and bassoon. She received a B.A. degree in music from Binghamton University and an M.Mus. degree from Manhattan School of Music.
