Public Service Fellowship
The Public Service Fellowship provides a Phillips Academy student with the opportunity to combine academic research with hands-on involvement in a community, state, or national public-service oriented organization. The intention is that by combining these two components, the recipient will not only advance their own knowledge of the subject matter, but will also produce research and work that will be of value to a partnering community organization, a community group or a particular public interest constituency.
Fellowship applicants are encouraged to consider a wide variety of topic areas. These may include, but are not limited to: arts/music, elderly populations, the environment, health care, housing, hunger, immigration, citizenship, political action, children and adults with special needs, youth, crime, community development, etc.
The fellowship recipient works closely with their community service advisor in the spring term to review their summer service plan, broad research outline, and background research bibliography. In collaboration with the community, state or national community partner, the recipient refines their broad research topic to one which will be of value to the partnering agency. This process is chronicled through a blog or journal kept by the recipient throughout the summer. The recipient is expected to produce a final research paper/ project that will be presented to the larger Phillips Academy community the following year. All uppers, lowers, and juniors are eligible to apply. The fellowship award includes a significant financial stipend, to be used as a stipend and to cover project-related expenses.
