Richard S. ("Scotty") MacNeish Archive Collection

Sixty years of research and publication by Richard Stockton ("Scotty") MacNeish produced an enormous quantity of field notes, maps, figures, manuscripts, photographs, videotapes, correspondence, permits, and other documents—plus a library of books, monographs and journals. These papers record some of the most important research in 20th-century archaeology.

The Richard S. MacNeish Papers are organized into five main record series:

  1. Robert S. Peabody Foundation for Archaeological Research (now the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology) 1971-1983,
  2. Andover Foundation for Archaeology (AFAR) 1984-2001,
  3. Boston University (1982-1986),
  4. Library
  5. Miscellaneous Correspondence.

Series I contains correspondence, field notes, site maps, photographs, slides and working notes for published manuscripts created by MacNeish as director of Robert S. Peabody Foundation for Archaeological Research.

Series II contains correspondence, field notes, site maps, photographs, slides and working notes for published manuscripts created by MacNeish as founder and director of AFAR.

Series III contains correspondence, and various materials relating to MacNeish's position at Boston University.

Series IV contains books, professional journals, off-prints, reprints, manuscripts, dissertations and theses. Many of these documents are signed by the respective author and include personal messages to MacNeish.

Series V contains various correspondence and documents created by MacNeish. At the present time, it is unclear to which series these documents relate. This will be determined by thorough examination; until then the documents will be filed in order by box and folder number.
