The Addison Contemporaries
Join The Addison Contemporaries to learn about today’s complex art market and help the Addison Gallery of American Art grow its superb collection.
The Addison has one of the greatest collections of American art in the world. Starting with 400 objects in 1931, its holdings have grown to over 17,000 objects across all media. Almost all of the collection’s expansion has come either through gifts of art or gifts of money to buy art.
The Addison Contemporaries is a new group for Addison supporters under the age of 40 who want to help the museum continue to expand its collection through purchase of works by living artists. The Addison’s collection is encyclopedic. To remain that way, the museum needs to be actively involved in adding the art of our time, great things from today that will be the venerated masterpieces of tomorrow.
To create a sense of vibrant community among members, and to help everyone learn more about the acquisition and collecting of art, The Addison Contemporaries will offer private collection visits, special museum exhibition tours, and artist studio tours each year. Sharing an insider’s view of the art world together as a group will make membership even more special.
Each year, we ask members to contribute $500 for an individual or $800 for a couple. Membership for college students is $250. These funds directly support the purchase of works of art for the Addison’s collection. Each spring, The Addison Contemporaries will be presented with three works of art, along with material explaining how each would fill a niche in the Addison’s collection. Members then vote electronically, and the chosen object is purchased with your funds and added to the collection so that students can learn from it and the public can enjoy it in the galleries. In addition to participation in two Addison Contemporaries’ events annually, members of the group will enjoy the same benefits offered to Friends of the Addison, including a 10% discount at the Addison museum shop, a 10% discount at Samuel’s Restaurant at the Andover Inn with a current Addison membership card, and recognition in the Addison’s annual report.
