Laurie Simmons, Winter 2016 Artist-in-Residence

Photographer Laurie Simmons spent Tuesday, March 29, on campus as the Addison’s Winter 2016 Edward E. Elson Artist-in-Residence, visiting with more than 100 students from Phillips Academy and Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Simmons's seminal series In and Around the House was exhibited at the Addison from February 6 through April 24, 2016.

Phillips Academy students in Peg Harrigan's photography classes, Catherine Tousignant's English classes, Emma Staffaroni's women's studies class, and Elaine Crivelli's museum studies class, and Lawrence High School students in Ashley Carey's photography class, eagerly listened as Simmons described her experiences as a young artist beginning her career in New York City during the 1970s, and her early experiments with photography that ultimately led to In and Around the House. Simmons also toured the gallery with the students, exploring ideas about creativity, sources of inspiration, photographic processes, depictions of gender roles over time, and the relationship between artist and viewer.
