Sarah Chayes '80 Receives Award

On January 25, Phillips Academy bestowed its highest honor, the Claude Moore Fuess Award, on 1980 graduate Sarah Chayes, the former National Public Radio (NPR) war correspondent who left her job in 2002 to help rebuild Kandahar, a city devastated during the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

During her visit to campus, Chayes spoke about life in Afghanistan, the importance of fighting for causes even in the face of overwhelming odds, and the failures in U.S. policy that have hindered progress in Afghanistan.  She also paid a visit to the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club, where many PA students do volunteer work through the school's comunity service program.
