Photo stonecutter

Since January, stonecutter Christoph Henning has been hard at work cutting the names of PA alums who fell in battle into the Deer Island granite blocks at the base of the reconstructed Memorial Bell Tower. Trained in Germany, Henning has 20 years of experience as a stonecutter and has worked on projects ranging from carving letters in tombstones to replacing broken appendages on statutes. For the Bell Tower project, Henning is cutting 800 small-size letters and 60 large letters. The inscriptions were originally carved in 1923, but over the years, some of the granite blocks had cracked, making it necessary for Henning to reproduce some of the inscriptions. His work is scheduled to be completed this month. (Photo by Ellen Hardy)
