Presenting Urinetown
December 1, 2007

The student cast members of Urinetown, a comedic satire inspired by works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, delighted audiences with their performances during the play’ s three-day run at the Tang Theatre. Written by Greg Kotis, featuring music by Mark Hollman, and with lyrics by Hollman and Kotis, Urinetown imagines a future in which a municipal government has banned private toilets—ostensibly to conserve water—during a 20-year drought. When a corrupt contractor begins to profit from basic human needs, an ordinary citizen leads a revolution to free the citizens from tyranny. The production was directed by Mark Efinger and choreographed by Judith Wombwell, both instructors in theatre and dance at Phillips Academy. Kevin Bleau, assistant professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, served as music director. Special dance sequences feature PA’s Andover Dance Group.
