Making a Bequest Provision

Sarah Abbot and Samuel Phillips were among the first to make bequests to what is now Phillips Academy. Since then, countless alumni, faculty, parents and friends have remembered the Academy in their planning. “Remembering Andover in your will is one of the most personal and affirming gestures possible,” observes Bill Scott ’52 chairman of Andover’s Gift Planning Committee.

Those who wish to follow in the founders’ footsteps by including Andover in his or her will can adapt the following language. If you have any questions, please contact the office using the information below:

BEQUEST LANGUAGE TO CONSIDER

UNRESTRICTED BEQUEST

I give, devise and bequeath (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of residuary estate) to the Trustees of Phillips Academy, located in Andover, Massachusetts, for its general educational and charitable purposes.

BEQUEST TO ENDOWMENT – TO CREATE A NAMED FUND ($100,000 MINIMUM)

I give, devise and bequeath (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of residuary estate) to the Trustees of Phillips Academy, located in Andover, Massachusetts, to establish the (name of fund) Fund, to be held as a permanent fund constituting part of the Academy’s general endowment funds. The principal of said fund may be invested in common with other funds of like character, provided that the identity of said fund shall be preserved at all times. Net income from said fund, as determined under applicable Academy policy, shall be used for general educational and charitable purposes (or for support of financial aid, teaching, athletics, campus preservation, the Addison Gallery, etc.).

RESTRICTED BEQUEST FOR STUDENT FINANCIAL AID – TO CREATE A NAMED FUND ($100,000 MINIMUM)

I give, devise and bequeath (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of residuary estate) to the Trustees of Phillips Academy, located in Andover, Massachusetts, to establish the (name of fund) Scholarship Fund, the net income from which, determined under applicable Academy policy, shall be used to provide financial aid to deserving students.
