Meet the Alumni
Gary Lee 1974
Washington, D.C.
When Gary Lee '74 boarded a plane to Andover from Tulsa, OK his parents thought he might never come home again. “They recognized my wanderlust at an early age” says Gary, who has since traveled to and reported from more than 60 countries for The Washington Post - gathering the Lowell Thomas Award in travel journalism (for his coverage of 9/11) and a Pulitzer Prize nomination (for articles about Gorbachev's Russia) along the way.
Gary's affinity for languages began at Andover with a Russian studies course that developed into a passion for learning about other cultures. Fluent in five languages, he credits Andover for expanding his world beyond the library walls and discovering new interests, among them his interest in running, which he continues today.
His newest venture, a Peruvian restaurant, Las Canteras, located in the culturally diverse Adams-Morgan section of D.C., is a popular spot that allows patrons to immerse themselves in the Peruvian culinary experience. Gary also co-owns a highly rated bed and breakfast in Arequipa, Peru.
Though his travels take him far - his next assignment is to Israel - he remains strongly connected to Andover by continuing his involvement as a co-agent, hosting and speaking at alumni events, helping organize Non-Sibi Day and serving on the alumni council.
