New England suffered many raids at the hands of French soldiers and their Native American allies at the turn of the 18th century. One raid in the summer of 1708 nearly destroyed nearby Haverhill, Massachusetts.

During his time as a Work Duty student, Charles was assigned to research a particular object within the museum’s collection. The object was a bone spoon that museum staff knew little about it other than its association with the Battle of Haverhill. During his research, Charlie examined the Battle from both the British and French perspectives. His work has shed important light on the origins and history behind the spoon and has enhanced its archaeological and ethnographic importance by illuminating its provenance for future researchers.

Charlie Cockburn is a third year student at Phillips Academy, Andover whose interest in archaeology was piqued by climbing over old castles and ring forts of Ireland. Charlie has continued to fan his interest in archaeology and history at the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology and is an aspiring archaeologist.
