The 27th Annual MLK Day

Phillips Academy's 27th annual MLK Day celebration will be highlighted by keynote speaker Melissa Harris-Perry, a professor, author, intellectual, and political commentator and the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University. There she is the executive director of the Pro Humanitate Institute and founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center, a center for the study of race, gender, and politics in the South. Also editor at large at Elle.com, Harris-Perry is perhaps best known for hosting the award-winning MSNBC television show Melissa Harris-Perry from 2012 to 2016.

Harris-Perry is the author of the award-winning Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought and Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America. She earned a BA degree in English from Wake Forest University and a PhD in political science from Duke University.
