SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2024

10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Santa Monica Beach

Join the Andover Southern California Regional Leadership Team in celebrating your Non Sibi Spirit at Heal the Bay's "Nothin' But Sand Beach Cleanup" family friendly event at Santa Monica Beach!

Andover will be volunteering as part of a larger event that welcomes members of the public who register. This is a fantastic opportunity to get your family and friends involved!

For a comfortable experience, volunteers are advised to wear sunblock and closed-toe shoes. Bring a hat and a jacket, as well as a snack and a reusable water bottle (bottles can be refilled with water provided by Heal the Bay). Feel free to rock your Andover attire or anything blue!

Heal the Bay will supply buckets and gloves to the first 300 registrants; people who have their own buckets and gloves are encouraged to bring them.

As an optional expression of the Non Sibi spirit, participants are welcome (though not required) to bring $10 gift cards to be donated to My Friend's Place. My Friend's Place is a Hollywood based organization that supports youth experiencing homelessness. Gift cards collected will be distributed to their clients. If you are inclined to bring a gift card (or cards!), My Friend's Place suggests that cards in $10 denominations for Target, 7/11, Ralph's, and Food4Less are most useful.

Let's come together for a rewarding and engaging experience while making a positive impact on beautiful Santa Monica Beach! If you are interested in attending, kindly register below.

Participation in this project requires a signed waiver which will be distributed at a later date.

A Religion Reimagined: How Women in Thailand Are Reshaping Theravada Buddhism

04/22/2024 5:00 PM 04/22/2024 6:30 PM America/New_York Andover A Religion Reimagined: How Women in Thailand Are Reshaping Theravada Buddhism

Brace Student Fellow Presentation

Nadia Choophungart ’24

Religion is a force that guides various social structures and communities, branching out to impact both law and social convention. Yet the way religion is implemented in daily life is often tied to other systems, such as gender. In Thailand, the powerful influence of Theravada Buddhism has developed from the country’s history and predominantly Buddhist population, and the gendered scripts that Theravada Buddhism follows directly affect the secular and spiritual lives of Thai women.

In this presentation, Nadia Choophungart ’24 examines the networks of power that impact women in historically gendered and patriarchal religions. Through analysis of both historical texts and existing law, she investigates who and what holds the power to determine what Buddhism stands for and explores current examples of Buddhist feminism, specifically the Thai Bhikkhuni order and merit-making (alms-giving) traditions that are transforming traditions and practices.

Open to the PA community; dinner will be served.
