The Least Dangerous Branch? Tribal Sovereignty and the U.S. Supreme Court

Start Date: November 10 7:00 PM
This event is open to the public

Bruce DuthuBruce Duthu, professor of Native American studies at Dartmouth College and author of "American Indians and the Law," will speak in Kemper Auditorium in the Elson Art Center on Chapel Ave. on the Phillips Academy campus on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m.  This event, which is the first in Phillips Academy's Native American Speaker Series, is free and open to the public.

Duthu will discuss the place of Indian tribes within the U.S. constitutional framework, and how defining the precise nature and scope of tribal powers has confounded policy makers from the formative days of the U.S. to the present. He also will shed light on the uncertainty as to whether Congress or the Supreme Court ultimately has the last word in shaping the contours of tribal powers.

Duthu is a member of the United Houma Nation of Louisiana. His visit is funded by a generous grant from the Abbot Academy Association and is in celebration of Native American Heritage month (November).
