PA comes from behind to win the match
At Loomis on September 24, 2016 at 2:30 PM
Down 0-2 in sets and down 2-9 in points in the third, Andover came back to win in 5 sets. Andover had to fend of 3 match points in the 4th set to push the match to a deciding set.
The theme if the day for Andover was coming back from behind. In the first set we earned all of one service point, we played decent volleyball but Loomis was on fire, especially digging/saving assumed lost balls-fantastic defense by Loomis. Andover never saw the lead in the first set.
In the second set Andover would see its only lead at 2-1, after that Loomis continued its inspired play.
Down 2-9 in the third set, Andover finally got some energy (like igniting an old propane grill where the sparks just dont seem to ignite a flame), a whopping 4 service points from Anezka Kuncova to bring ys back to 7-9. Down 11-8 Claudia Leopold stepped to the service line for 3 consecutive service points giving Andover a 12-11 advantage. Although Loomis wrestled the lead back, Andover sided out and Brooke Fleming served Andover to a 15-13 lead. At 19-19 Loomis found some momentum to get to 21-20, but then Andover's Claudia Leopold served the ball short on thier side and befuddled Loomis for 4 service points to force a 4th set.
In the 4th Andover started in a 0-3 hole, evened the score at 4-4. Loomis went ahead 8-5, 10-7,11-9,13-11,17-16. Andover kept fighting back to go ahead 19-18...and (gulp) Loomis sided out and served 4 straight points to go ahead 23-19, and 24-20. Anezka Kuncova served 5 straight points to force a 5th set.
The blocking by Evelyn Mesler, Claudia Leopold, Sidney Holder and Sewon Park helped turn this game around; Serene Liu dug out some lost balls on spectacular dives that rivalled Loomis' defense. Brooke Fleming and Anezka Kuncova set a smart match, and Margot Forti and Janneke Evans hit winners frim the outside.
In the 5th set Andover was dazed and went down 3-8 on the side-switch, benefitted from a side-out and then the unlikely joy ride began. Brooke Fleming served 3 service points supported by smart and decisive play by the whole team. 7-9 Andover was back in the match: Margit Forti served SEVEN straight service points, again with tremendous support from the whole team, to pull off the upset.
Thanks to friends, family and JV for cheering us along and sticking with us to the end.
