The Big Blue battled to an exciting 1-1 draw for their home opener versus Rivers on Smoyer Field.
Another beautiful fall day marked the home opener for GVS against perennial powerhouse, Rivers School. The first half of play had the Big Blue on their heels as the Rivers girls looked to use their speed and skill up the flanks to create offensive opportunities. But the defensive line, inspired by some great work earlier in the week with Coach Scott, would not be beaten. Holding the line and Rivers at bay were co-captains Caroline Shipley and Jeanine Moreau and defensive teammates Nikki Dlesk, Jordy Fenton, Britney Bourassa, and Natalia Suarez. Keeper Antonia Tammaro did a great job keeping Rivers off the scoreboard in the first half of play.
The Andover girls hoped to step up their game for the final forty. Rivers struck first on a corner kick play - getting to the ball first as it bounced inside the box. That goal only served as inspiration for the Big Blue to work hard. Midfielders Courtney Masotti, Bri Fadden and Olivia LaMarche remained determined to control the midfield third of play and work to find strikers Zoe Oasis, Cassie Chin and Sarah Humes.
With just under ten minutes remaining in the half, the Big Blue combined with perfect one-two touch play that ended with Natalia Suarez to Cassie Chin, who scored one of the most beautiful goals in recent GVS memory to knot the game, 1-1.
With just minutes to play, Antonia Tammaro secured the win on a breakaway attempt with a gutsy save outside the 18 yard box, earning her player of the game.
The Andover girls remain undefeated at 1-0-1.
