Andover Earns 2-0 Win on the Road over Perennial Powerhouse Rivers School
At Rivers on September 17, 2016 at 2:15 PM
Goals by strikers Zoe Oasis '17 and ninth grade phenom Maddy Silveira gave the Big Blue its first ever win against Rivers, the 2015 Class B champions. Co-captain Antonia Tammaro came up big to secure the shutout.
After a disappointing start to the season earlier in the week, GVS put their heads down and got to work on Thursday and Friday in preparation for one of the most talented NEPSAC teams, Rivers School. In a hard fought battle, Rivers had the first big chance on the day getting in behind the Andover defense. Co-Captain Antonia Tammaro turned away a shot from just inside the box to help turn the momentum back to the Big Blue.
With 17 minutes left to play in the first half, co-captain Cassie Chin '17 found Zoe Oasis for a quick strike and goal.
GVS settled down in the second half and did a great job moving the ball but struggled to put any of its efforts away in the final third, including a number of dangerous corner kicks sent in by midfielder Natalia Suarez '17. With just minutes to play, Maddy Silveira '20 came off the bench and put away the game after a perfect slotted pass by Morgan Kuin '20. Maddy's goal is the first of her Andover career.
Rivers kept the pressure on but the defensive focus from Kaitlin Hoang '17, Tookie Wilson '18, Deyana Marsh '17 and Nikki Dlesk '17 made the difference as they refused to give up anything in the final third. Bri Fadden '17 moved from striker into the midfield and showed tremendous will and athleticism as she played great soccer on both sides of the ball.
The midfield was led by Natalia Suarez who earned Player of the Game. With the win, Andover stands at 1-1 as they prepare for their home opener against Middlesex on Wednesday afternoon on Graves Field. Thanks to all our awesome parents and fans for their spirited support of Big Blue soccer.
