Twenty-nine wrestlers representing twenty-two different schools from across New England competed in the 4th Annual Phillips Academy Female Wrestling tournament on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the tournament, the wrestlers participated in a technique clinic run by Leigh Jaynes-Provisor, 2015 World Bronze Medalist for Team USA. Her appearance was sponsored by the Abbot Academy Foundation. The event was held in round-robin format with seven different weight divisions. Each entrant competed in three or four matches. Marisol Nugent, a freshman from Masconomet Regional High School and champion at 120, was named Outstanding Wrestler. Phillips Academy entered five wrestlers, each of whom placed in the top three, led by Liz Seero ’18, who won an individual title at this event for the second year in a row. Carley Kukk ’19 and Dani Valverde ’18 placed second with Sarah Stack ’19 and Martha Gao ’17 placing third. Seero had two pins and a come-from-behind 7-6 decision en route to her title. Valverde and Kukk each had two pins, and Stack had a 12-1 major decision. Gao fared well, competing in the toughest weight class in the tournament the day after going 1-1 competing against boys in the varsity meet. Overall, Phillips Academy wrestlers compiled a record of 9-6 with seven pins. Phillips will compete in the Wayland Girl’s Tournament on February 12, the Massachusetts Girl’s State tournament on March 5, and the USA Wrestling Girl’s Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City on March 25-26.
