Basil Alfaro '18 and Holden Ringer '17 set the tone for a strong team showing.
After a strong month of training and development, the Andover boys' cross country team traveled to NMH on a brisk fall afternoon to open their interscholastic season.
The runners arrived ready to race, and challenged by strong runners from other schools, they showed their competitive spirit with great performances in both the Varsity and JV races. Basil Alfaro '18 paced the Varsity crew with a time of 17:32, finishing fifth overall and breaking 18 minutes for the first time. Holden Ringer '17, fresh off of two spectacular time trials on the home course, followed closely behind Alfaro, coming in sixth (17:55) and continuing his cross country ascendancy. Colby Lapointe '16 (18:33) and newcomer Henry Spritz '19 (18:33) ran well together and finished just ahead of Nathan Goldthwaite '18, who toughed out an impressive 18:52 in his cross country debut. Seniors Tevis Vitale '16 (18:56), Noah Belser '16 (18:57), and Patrick Dolan '16 (19:05) rounded out the Varsity in promising early-season form. Andover finished third of six teams.
In the JV race, Jacob Buehler '19 won the race, his first, with a speedy time of 19:10 and took home a pint of NMH maple syrup as a prize for his efforts. Buehler and Alex Emerson '17 worked together through the fields and woods of the course, challenging each other down the stretch, and although Buehler took the top prize, Emerson finished close behind in 19:11 to secure second place overall. Spencer Davis '18 (19:29) took third to complete the Andover sweep of the first three spots in a brilliant day for the JV team. Sebastian Bishop '17 chopped another seven seconds off his personal record to finish in 19:41, and John Wu '17 ran a strong 20:14 to round out the top five. The other Andover JV runners turned in great times as well: David Cohen '18 (20:21), Jake Zanazzi '18 (20:27), Sam Tobin '18 (20:27), Abdu Donka '18 (20:43), Ethan Brown '17 (21:20), and Will Kantaros '18 (23:33). Andover JV finished first out of four teams.
Looking ahead, the Andover boys' cross country runners will welcome Choate to the Great Lawn this Saturday, October 10th.
