Thayer and Penalties Slow Down Big Blue
At Thayer on December 9, 2015 at 4:00 PM
The team fell behind early and seven penalties against added up to road loss.
Thayer started strong as Andover had trouble breaking out of the defensive zone, which led to two early goals. Goaltender Matt Schoen made big stops after the early onslaught to keep Andover within reach until late in the second period when an icing penalty and the ensuing face-off spelled bad news as the Thayer center was able to take the draw right to the net for a last second score and the period ended 3-0. Andover was not disheartened however. The team's first shift of the third was a dominating one as they stormed the oppositions' goal. The next line came barreling over the boards and the feeling was that a goal was imminent. Then, a penalty was taken by an Andover player which slowed the momentum down. While the penalty kill unit and Matt Schoen were able to kill all seven penalties, the lack of time the team spent in the offensive zone became the story. Collin Nugent scored the only goal on a power play to make it 3-1 as time seemed to be speeding up. Finally, Thayer got its fourth goal, with about a minute left, and that was that.
