Andover baseball finished its 2017 season at 15-4-1 with a 4-2 win at archrival Phillips Exeter in both teams’ season finale on Saturday. JACKSON EMUS ’19 (pictured) plated all four Andover runs with two-run singles in the third and eighth innings.
Consecutive base hits by Kai Marcos ’18 and Joe Simouirian ’18 put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the third. Exeter elected to intentionally walk Taylor Beckett ’17, loading the bases for Emus, who promptly scored Marcos and Simourian with a sharp single to centerfield.
A nearly identical scenario unfolded with two outs in the top of the eighth. With the score tied 2-2, Exeter again intentionally walked Beckett with runners on second and third and first base open. Emus was up to the task once more, lining a sharp single through the right side, scoring Chris Dettorre ’17 and Simourian and giving Andover a 4-2 lead it would never relinquish.
Rob Cerulle drew the start and pitched ably into the sixth, fanning six and scattering just four hits. Henry Ennen ’17 came on in the eighth and blanked Exeter in 3.2 innings of dominant relief.
Beckett doubled and singled to bolster the offense, finishing the season with a team-best .411 batting average. Lucas Stowe ’20 added Andover’s only other extra base hit with a leadoff double in the eighth.
