Basketball - Girls V

At Phillips Academy, our girls' basketball program prides itself on the development of the whole athlete, both on and off the court. Every year, we match up against the best basketball schools in the region, and we pride ourselves on our strength of schedule and level of competition. Throughout the season, the team works with a certified strength and conditioning coach, Chris Collins. Coach Collins also creates workout plans for our athletes to follow over vacations and in the off-season, if they choose to do so. We also work with the Academy’s board certified sports dietitian and performance nutritionist, Aggie Kip, to focus on developing healthy habits and diet plans that will lead to peak performance, both off and during the competitive season.

The 2013-2014 season started off with a rash of injuries as two returning senior starters tore their ACLs before the season began. Undaunted, the girls came together, showing a positive attitude and unwavering work ethic, and improving every day. We finished our season on a high note with a big win versus archrival Phillips Exeter and taking NMH to overtime in the tournament.

2013-2014 Co-Captains Kasey Hartung and Katie Kreider have continued their athletic careers at Bates College and Hamilton College, respectively. Also noteworthy, Cara Cavanaugh ’15 was named to the All-New England team last year; she was joined by post-graduate Courtney Erickson ’15 (a 2014 graduate of BB&N).

The season outlook is bright for an Andover squad that returns seven members from last year’s team. Cara Cavanaugh and Ravenne Nasser return as seniors. Sarah Humes and Victoria Bergeron return as 11th graders. Laura Bilal, Emma Kelley, and Antonia Tammaro return as 10th grade guards.

We have a number of newcomers joining the team. Gadson Lefft (Lake Wylie, SC) and Courtney Erickson (from Everett, MA) both join the class of 2015. Sydney Baumgardt joins the team as an 11th grader from Colorado. And last but not least, four freshmen have made the varsity team, Bailey Colon (Carver, MA), Molly Katarincic (Pittsburg, PA), Janneke Evans (New York, NY), and Teagan Thompson (New York, NY).

Many of our basketball players have starred for the Big Blue on other varsity teams during the fall and spring seasons. In fact, involvement in athletics beyond basketball is encouraged, and those who do are often our most accomplished athletes. In recent years, graduates of our basketball program have continued their athletic careers at Amherst College, Babson College, Bates College, McGill University, Tufts University, Wagner University and Wesleyan University.

Our head coach, Lani Silversides, was a three sport all-state high school athlete (in soccer, basketball, and track) and holds experience as a former athlete competing at the D1 level in college. She is a 2013 New England Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, recognized for her accomplishments and contributions to the game as both a player and a coach.
