Abbot Academy

One of the first educational institutions in New England founded for girls and women, Abbot Academy opened its doors to seventy students on May 6, 1829 and endured until those same doors and all the material goods inside them were entrusted to Phillips Academy on June 28, 1973 when the two academies merged.

For more than 40 years, the Abbot Academy Association has celebrated its mission to "preserve the spirit, dignity, and high standard of the Abbot Academy tradition and to provide an additional means of carrying on the educational aims of Abbot Academy at Phillips Academy through support of students, faculty, staff, and properties at Phillips Academy."

The Girls of Abbot

The Abbot Archives Project: Alumnae Preserving Abbot’s History

The newly formed Abbot Archives Project comes from the realization that the history and memories of Abbot Academy are being eroded with time. As members the Class of 1973, Abbot’s final class, we are aware of the importance of preserving our history for current students, as well as for researchers who are both curious and enthusiastic to learn more about the Abbot Academy education and experience. The Abbot Archives Project was conceived with that end in mind. The current Abbot Archives, now part of the Phillips Academy’s Archives and Special Collections, house many official documents, but lack the full student voice—the snippets of personal recollection that give richness and context to those records. The Abbot Initiative Steering Committee invites you to submit photographs, scrapbooks, letters, journals, printed works, audio and video, and other items to Paige Roberts, director of Archives and Special Collections. Paige is happy to talk with you about the donation process. She can be reached at 978-749-4069 or by e-mail at abbotarchives@andover.edu.
