Hi, my name is Kate Taylor-Mighty, and I’m a two year “lower” (sophomore to most people) from Boston, Massachusetts. My mom is from Missouri and my dad is from New York, so I don’t really feel like a Bostonian, even though I’ve lived there all my life. I live in Smith House, a small, homey dorm of 10 upperclassmen girls, located just behind Gelb, our science center. I play soccer (not well), basketball, and softball, and I like to sing and dance around in my dorm with my friends.
One thing I love about being a boarder at PA is dorm life. I refer to life in a girls’ dorm as a “permanent sleepover. Some of my best friends today were in my freshman dorm last year. My roommate and I are really close, and we decided to stay together when we chose to live in Smith House. My dorm is truly my second home. We have a great group of girls: our biggest bonding event so far has been watching the presidential and vice-presidential debates in our house counselor’s living room with popcorn, chips, and LOTS of chocolate.
This year, I’m taking modern European History, Algebra II, Chemistry, French Literature, and English, my favorite class. I’ve always loved to read and write, and so far I’ve had awesome English teachers here at PA. I’m taking English 200, the lower-year English course, which involves a lot of diverse kinds of writing. I love getting excited about a writing assignment and exploring all the different styles off writing, from narratives to newspaper articles.
Every PA student participates in fitness options year-round. Before I came to PA, I really only played softball and basketball during the year. Since freshman year, I’ve experimented with swimming, squash, and now soccer, sports I never thought I’d be interested in. I’m thinking about trying yoga or dance for the winter term. There are so many sport options, from the instructional to varsity level. I wish I could try them all!
One of the things I love about PA is that there are so many things to do outside of classes and sports. I’m involved with the Phillipian (our campus newspaper), Azure (the all-female a cappella group), Eco-Action (an environmental awareness club), Gospel Choir, and Model UN. I’m currently directing a DramaLab, a short one-act play produced entirely by students. I also do a community service project called Science Club For Girls, where I get to participate in fun science experiments with local fifth-graders. I’m also a campus tour guide for the admissions office, so maybe I’ll get to meet some of you! In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with friends, finding great new music to listen to, going downtown for a coffee break at Starbucks, going to the movies, reading, and watching Heroes, the best TV show ever. Now I get to add blogging to my list!
