Our nation’s second language and a key language throughout the Americas, Spanish is taught at Andover by the largest of the departments in the Division of World Languages. Teachers in our department come with advanced degrees in the Spanish language and literary field and are native language speakers from the US, Latin America and Spain. In our various courses students will encounter through their teachers’ cultural background and experiences, perspectives on the Spanish-speaking world that parallel the regions of the world where Spanish is widely spoken. From the very first year of Spanish language study students learn about the cultures, geography and history of the Hispanic world. We further encourage our students to live and learn in this world, whether through service learning in nearby Lawrence, through language programs in Spain (yearlong or summer), or a joint archeology-language program in Central America.
