Classical Languages

Few high schools are able to offer the opportunity to take both Latin and Ancient Greek. There are lots of good reasons to take advantage of Phillips Academy’s strong program in the classical languages. If you want to understand the roots of Western civilization, learning either or both of these languages is a good path. If you want to understand language structure—including the grammar and vocabulary of English—Latin and Greek provide a wonderful foundation. If you want dive right into important issues in the study of culture and history, and not wait until the third or fourth year of language study, we routinely do precisely this in our Latin and Greek courses. For in-country study, students can go to SYA/Italy and learn Italian in the bargain!
