Interests
My area of interest and dissertation topic is "Culture as an educative factor in identity development: Black Appalachia 1940-1970". I’m not at the dissertation stage as of yet. I am in the process of doing fieldwork in a small village in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It has been identified as a W.I.N. (White, Indian, Negro) community, and they really have a fascinating history. I'm looking not at the history of education, but redefining the traditional view of education as "schooling," broadening it, and then looking at that broadened definition's influence on a historical time period. My academic program views education as a topic, much like that of labor history, women's history, social history, and African American history.
