Interests
I am a specialist in recent U.S. history. I wrote Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life (Knopf, 2002), and I am working on a new book about Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt and their two friends William and Caroline Phillips.

In my U.S. history survey we study the U.S. in the context of world history, and I especially enjoy working with students on their winter and spring term research papers. Although I use class discussions, movies, debates, and other techniques in class, please see the following C-SPAN program to get a flavor of what a lecture in my class would be like: http://www.booktv.org/Watch/3185/Theodore+Roosevelt+A+Strenuous+Life.aspx
