2008-2009 Prize Competitions

The following competition is open only to Juniors:

THE CHARLES C. CLOUGH PRIZE FOR READING INTERPRETATION

Two Prizes of $50 each

Two prizes for a creative, original response to a text read in English 100.  Winners to be chosen from essays written for English 100 in the fall and winter.  First awarded in 1943.  For readings and/or performances.  Preliminaries: Thursday, April 10 at 6:45 in the Bulfinch Debate Room; Finals: Monday, April 14 at 6:45 p.m. in the Bulfinch Debate Room.  No more than one submission per student.

The following competition is open only to Lowers:

THE DAVID G. WOOD FELLOWSHIP

Prize: $200


In memory of David G. Wood, class of 1929, this fellowship enables a lower who has demonstrated an ability in the analysis of a short story or poem to continue to develop this interest and/or ability during the summer vacation.  Submit to the Selection Committee a description of the proposed program, a recommendation from P.A. faculty, and a short sample of written work submitted for a class assignment. APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE DEPARTMENT OFFICE.

The following competition is open to Lowers and Uppers:

THE GOODHUE PRIZE EXAMINATION

Two Prizes of $75 Each

For essays on literature or a general topic demonstrating proficiency in elementary rhetoric. Funded in 1936 by the family of Francis A. Goodhue of Andover.  Two prizes, selected from essays in 10th and 11th grade English.  No more than one submission per student.

The following competition is open only to Seniors:

THE CHARLES C. CLOUGH ESSAY PRIZE

Prize $100


For an essay on a literary subject (1,000-1,500 words). First awarded in 1923 by friends of Charles C. Clough ’06. In memory of his interest in literary studies and his devotion to Phillips Academy. The winner will be selected from essays in the Senior electives for the fall or winter term.

The following competitions are open to All Students:

THE MEANS ESSAY

Prize $150

For declamation of an original essay.  Open to the entire school.  First awarded in 1868. Funded in 1867 by William G. Means of Andover. Subject: A personal essay written at any time during the school year. May be an essay written for a student publication or a class.

Winner(s) will read at the All-School Meeting April 30

THE JOHN HORN BURNS PRIZE FOR FICTION

Prize $75

For an original short story written during the school year. Founded in 1961 by Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Lawrence Burns in memory of their son, John Horn Burns, class of 1933. Submissions limited to one story. Stories will be chosen from submissions to the prize committee.

THE CHARLES SNOW BURNS POETRY PRIZE

Three Prizes of $50 Each

For original poems (up to three poems, but no more than 5 pages) written during the school year.  May be awarded to one student in each of the Senior class, the Upper class, and to one student of either the Lower or Junior class.  Funded in 1944.  Must be typed and include your name and year of graduation.
