Apply now for Summer Session 2017
January 06, 2017
—Phillips Academy’s Summer Session just launched its new online application form, streamlining the process of applying to Andover’s five-week academic enrichment program for students entering grades eight through twelve.
In addition to the program’s already extensive array of courses, several new hybrid and online classes have been added to the curriculum, including:
- Seeing in Patterns, Thinking in Code: Combining a variety of disciplines, including poetry, design, linguistics, history, physics, computer science, and math, this course teaches students how to solve problems, communicate more effectively, and use elementary computer programming as a tool for inquiry and expression. This hybrid class offers two weeks on campus followed by three weeks of online learning and collaboration.
- Serving Up Science: The Chemistry of Cooking: Students will explore chemistry and the scientific method through labs, field trips, projects, and research focused on the science of cooking and baking. After completing three weeks of online learning and at-home experimentation, students will spend two weeks on campus.
- Developing Your Visual Voice: Experimental Documentary: Using formats ranging from stop-motion animation to video collage, this course is devoted to the creation of short videos that address issues of importance to students. After two weeks on campus, students will have three weeks of online learning and filming independently.
- Prove It: Upper Level Analytic Geometry: Summer Session’s first fully online course, Upper Level Analytic Geometry is intended to follow a course on proof, in which students have studied congruence of triangles, parallelism, and quadrilaterals. Through guided exercises using dynamic software and instructional videos, students will work with a geometry coach to become proficient in the inner workings of geometric shapes and angles and their relationship to the natural world. With permission, Phillips Academy students may take this course for credit in order to accelerate their progress through Andover’s math sequence.
Celebrating its 75th year, Summer Session is a premier summer academic enrichment program offering an array of traditional and innovative courses. More than 600 students from across the United States and around the globe come together for five weeks to prepare for the rigors of the best colleges and for leading and serving in this complex world.
