Addison Gallery Debuts First Online Video

'A New Era for the Addison’ Premieres

June 11, 2009 —The Addison Gallery of American Art is now featured in an online video available to a global audience. The video presents some of the gallery’s most famous paintings by Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper and Jackson Pollock, as well as pieces from its vast photography collection. Titled “A New Era for the Addison,” it can be seen below and on Vimeo.com, as well as on the gallery’s own Web site at www.addisongallery.org, under the "About Us" tab. It will soon be available as an iTunes podcast as well.

“The video is a great way to introduce the gallery to people who may not know about us,” said Brian Allen, director of the Addison. “It also serves to underscore the impact we have not only on Phillips Academy and the region, but on the world of American art scholars.”

In addition to sharing a few of its more than 16,000 objects with viewers, the video offers an overview of the museum’s founding in 1931 and its sustained, central role as an academic gallery not just for Phillips Academy but for many other private and public schools in the region. The video closes with a preview of the gallery’s future, with a glimpse of what the building will look like, replete with new learning center, classrooms and storage, when its three-year restoration project concludes in 2010. “A New Era for the Addison” was produced at no cost in collaboration with Phillips Academy’s department of communication.

“This is just our latest endeavor to communicate with visitors and donors using new technology,” said Allen, who credits a generous gift from Argie and Oscar Tang ’56 for launching the gallery’s technological initiative five years ago. “This initiative has allowed us to purchase a new collection and development database, which supports the digitizing of the entire collection.”

The Addison also hosts a blog and can now be found on Twitter and Facebook.
