PA Celebrates Class of 2009 and Prize Recipients
Thirty-four awards given to exemplary members of student community

—The 325 members of Phillips Academy’s Class of 2009 entered Cochran Chapel Wednesday in a grand procession amid the thunderous applause of their school peers. The All-School Meeting marks one of the last times the graduating class will gather before commencement on June 7. In addition to recognizing the Class of 2009, Head of School Barbara Landis Chase, along with Dean of Studies John Rogers and Director of Athletics Mike Kuta, presented 34 awards for a wide variety of student accomplishments in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in the community at large.
The prizes and their honorees are as follows:
Awards to carry out projects this summer
The David Spencer Hackett Memorial Scholarship
Alanna D. Waldman ’10
The scholarship honors the memory of a member of the Class of 1961 who played a central role in the successful introduction of Outward Bound into the United States. A Marine officer in Vietnam, David Hackett was killed in action while attempting to save one of his men. In his memory, a scholarship is awarded annually to an upper for an Outward Bound program during the summer.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award
Celia Lewis ’10, Michael Scognamiglio ’10, Toan Nguyen ’10
The endowment recognizes and encourages service toward social change offered in the spirit of Dr. King.
The Winton Volunteership
Annie Li ’10, A. Michelle Mariko ’10
The program encourages students to work in community-based self-help efforts and, by doing so, come to a deeper understanding of and concern for the problems facing underdeveloped communities either in the United States or abroad.
The Richard J. Phelps Summer Award
Zahra Bhaiwala ’10
The award supports a Phillips Academy graduate in the summer after his or her graduation for community service, work, or travel. Special preference is given to those young people who opt to work in an inner-city environment in the United States.

Awarded annually to a senior, upper, and lower who made the greatest improvement in scholarship during the previous school year.
Van Duzer Prize
Kwon-Yong Jin ’09
Awarded to a member of the senior class on the basis of high scholarship up to the close of the student’s upper year.
Wells Prize
Nicole Villar ’12
Awarded to a member of the junior class who has displayed the outstanding qualities of loyalty, perseverance, and sterling character.
Keyes Prize
Sarah Onorato ’11
Awarded to a student who, in the lower year, shows outstanding qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and athletic ability.
Andover Club Prize
Rainer Crosett ’10
Awarded to an outstanding upper who combines excellence in scholarship with achievement in other fields.
Stiles Prize
Celia Lewis ’10
Awarded to an upper whose judgment and loyalty to the school have been exemplary.
The Lorant Fellowship
Rachel Coleman ’10, Celia Lewis ’10, Jacqueline Wallace ’10
The award seeks to recognize Andover students who, through sheer determination and effort, have demonstrated the desire to succeed.
The Warren Prize
Elias Howe ’09
Awarded to a member of the senior class preparing to enter Amherst College, who on the basis of character and scholarship, is deemed most deserving of the award by the faculty.

Achievement Prize
Regina Shepherd ’09
Awarded to a member of the senior class who has been a student at Andover for at least two years and who has exhibited great personal and academic achievement.
Ayars Prize
Brian Russell ’09
Awarded to a member of the senior class who, through work, perseverance, and seeking after excellence, has established a position of respect and admiration in the school community.
Fuller Prize
Andrew Pohly ’09
Awarded to a member of the senior class who, having been at Andover at least two years, has best exemplified and upheld in his or her life and work at Andover the ideals and traditions of the school.
Isabel Maxwell Hancock Award
Trisha Macrae ’09
Awarded to a senior who has shown depth of understanding, sensitivity, response to the needs of others, and concern for the welfare of all.
Richard Jewett Schweppe Prize
Thor Shannon ’09
Awarded to a member of the senior class in recognition of an unusual spirit of cooperation and friendliness.
Abbot Stevens Prize
Corinna Lewis ’09
Awarded to a member of the senior class who, by virtue of character and leadership, has made a significant contribution to the Academy and to other members of the class.
Kingsbury Prize
Elizabeth Patino ’09
Awarded to a student of outstanding character who is especially distinguished for perseverance and resolution.

Abbot Athletic Award
Kaitlin Gaiss ’09
Awarded annually to a girl who has excelled in varsity sports and whose loyalty and good sportsmanship exemplify the highest ideals of Andover athletics.
Schubert Key
Catherine E. Coppinger ’09
Awarded annually to a member of the senior class who has excelled in varsity athletics and who has exemplified the qualities of sound character, cheerfulness, and good sportsmanship on the athletic field.
Press Club Award
Kaitlyn A. McInnis ’09, Brian M. Russell ’09
Awarded to a boy and a girl who have shown through their performances on the athletic fields that they have been the most capable athletes of the past year.
Raymond T. Tippet Memorial Award
Anthony A. Morlani ’09
Awarded annually to a senior member of the varsity football or baseball team whose loyalty, courage, and modesty exemplify the character of Ray Tippet and the best traditions of Andover athletics. Established in 1962 by members of the Class of 1945 for a prize in memory of their classmate, Raymond T. Tippet.
Phelps Award
Berol Dewdney ’09, Reid M. Mosquera ’09
Awarded in honor of those student athletes whose sportsmanship, loyalty, humility, and commitment to the success of others is representative of Richard J. Phelps ’46 and Phillips Academy athletics.
Harold J. Sheridan Award
Peter Ly ’09
Awarded to the student who has contributed most to the intramural athletic program. Funded in 1956 by bequest of Fannie J. Sheridan in memory of her grandson Harold Joseph Sheridan Jr., Class of 1943, who gave his life for his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1944. The honor was first awarded in 1957.
