About Barbara Chase
Barbara Landis Chase is Phillips Academy’s fourteenth head of school and the first woman to hold the position. Prior to coming to Andover, Chase was headmistress of the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore from 1980 to 1994, leading the school to national recognition, particularly for its interaction with the community.
Chase holds an A.B. in history from Brown University and a M.L.A. from Johns Hopkins University. A central figure in the world of secondary schools, she served on the board of directors of the National Association of Independent Schools, was president of the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, and was on the board of overseers for the Annenberg Institute for School Reform.
She is a member of the Headmasters Association and the Head Mistresses Association of the East. Before leading the Bryn Mawr School, Chase taught for seven years at the Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island, also serving as the school’s director of admissions for four years. She received the Bene Merenti medal from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 1990 for “outstanding service in education leadership.”
Chase is a former trustee of Brown, where she chaired the Corporation Committee on Admission and Financial Aid and served as a Fellow of the University. She currently serves as a member of the Board of Governors for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, Massachusetts. She is married to David Chase, and they have two daughters, both of whom are married, and a grandson.
